Flow State Coworking

a mindfully designed virtual coworking space restoring confidence + hope through community support and accountability

our story

The idea for Flow State Coworking arrived on a lonely afternoon in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic. I was frustrated with myself. I struggled with my desire to use my time productively and the very real challenge of facing grief, worry, and overwhelm.

I’d always dreamed of having extra time to work on creative projects, home improvements, and business ideas. Maybe you did, too? Unfortunately, for me this newfound abundance of time was all tied up in my emotional state of upheaval leaving me short of the energy required for those activities I’d dreamed of.

Thankfully a few friends in separate phone calls all wisely granted me the permission “to do nothing.” That social permission slip was so liberating and ironically and unexpectedly generative. Without the burden of my inner-critic my creative wheels started turning once more…

I typically relish my time home alone but I also need and desire social connection and accountability to function at my best. I understood that if I were furloughed during life as it used to be that I’d simply go to a cafe to get my fix of human connection.

I had a revelation: If I feel this way and have this desire there must be other people craving this same connection and accountability too.

And maybe, just maybe, I can create this space for us to convene.

Enter…

flow state coworking

Flow State Coworking operates almost like a virtual coffee shop, your coworkers work on their tasks from the comfort of their home, cameras on and microphones off.

The Community is based on the Principles of: Mindfulness, Social Networking, Community Over Competition, and Creation Over Consumption.

The Mission of Flow State Coworking is to create a conscious community built with mindfulness (defined here as non-judgmental awareness) to offer social connection, motivation and accountability.

Within Flow State Coworking there are pre-set moments to connect with your coworkers, mindful breaks designed to revitalize your body and mind and scheduled work blocks set aside for your chosen projects.

We’re separate yet very much together.

While it’s not the goal of Flow State for you to “get more done” in our hours together it is very likely to be a side-effect.

Coworkers use this time for all sorts of things— full-time WFH jobs, tackling chores and tying up loose ends, graduate school studying, creating art, developing passion projects and so much more.

At Flow State the time already was and always will be yours to be spent in whatever way you like.

I hope you’ll join us

I support the visions of others by creating spaces for them to actualize their potential and passion. To accomplish this I lead movement classes that strengthen the body and mind and support writers in their creative process. I am also a movement-based performing artist whose work explores healing space and release.

I work as a Senior Youth Programs Director at the Nu'uanu YMCA. It's the largest YMCA on the island, which is both a blessing and also comes with its own sets of challenges. In this role, I oversee all youth programs offered by my YMCA branch (typically from preschool through teens), which currently in this climate involves child care for essential service personnel. Although I'd love to work from my office, I am unfortunately asthmatic so I'm working from my home in an effort to keep my distance.

My interests include food, drinks, yoga, mindfulness activities, politics, and Hawaiian culture (I live in Hawai'i and am also native Hawaiian).

Things I’m working on: My regular job (remote currently, and often with check ins and meetings with partners and coworkers about the work.

frequently asked questions

  • what does flow state mean?

    • Athletes might call it the zone, artists their groove, professionals their focus. Flow state is defined as being completely immersed in the task at hand or in other words being mindful. Finding your flow or practicing mindfulness helps to reduce stress, facilitate joy and enhance creativity and problem solving capacity

  • what is virtual coworking?

    • Virtual coworking is just like traditional coworking except instead of meeting in a physical space we meet in an online forum. Virtual coworking can help you form connection through community and restore hope and confidence in these weird and challenging times.

  • Who is virtual coworking for?

    • Anyone and everyone. We’re a global network of coworkers currently convening across 3 distinct time zones. Participants work on all sorts of projects from full-time WFH jobs, tackling chores and tying up loose ends, graduate school studying, creating art, developing passion projects and so much more. PS it’s donation based and there’s no minimum donation necessary

  • how’s it work and what’s a normal day like?

    • We begin with a 5 minute mindful activity (a little bit of movement, meditation, etc.) followed by brief introductions of new coworkers and an opportunity to share your goal for that specific coworking session. If you arrive after the mindful moment and intros simply say hello in the chat and pop your goal there as well to increase accountability and connection. Different days involve different amounts of connection time and activities. You’re welcome to come and go as you please and utilize the chat as much as you like to connect with your fellow coworkers. The end of the day is marked by another brief mindful activity and optional happy hour where you can decompress from the day’s events with the community. We are currently a donation based coworking space with no minimum required donation

  • can i invite a friend? can i test it out for one day?

  • what’s the schedule and operating hours>

    • Flow State Coworking currently operates Monday-Friday with longer work blocks on M/W/F and a power hour on T/Th. We currently have coworkers joining in from 3 different time zones. As we grow we hope to add more work blocks and coworkers from more time zones :)

  • do i have to keep my camera on the whole time?

    • We recommend using pareto’s principle aka the 80/20 rule: Have your camera on 80% of the time and off 20% of the time. We suggest this balance to help foster the sense of community and connection and to help all of us stay on task. That said you have 100% agency to use the camera function as much or as little as you like

  • what if i change my mind? or what if i only want to work and not network or socialize?

    • No worries you’re free to pop in and out at any time or discontinue your membership at any time

Donations can be made three ways. 1. via PayPal to erica.sergott@gmail.com 2. through Venmo @ericasergott or 3. Through the donation button below.
